Which products are right for my skin?
You can easily find the Nourish Botanicals products ideally suited for your skin type using the search by 'skin type' from the main menu of this site.
Will my skin feel oily or greasy when I use Nourish Botanicals serums or moisturisers?
No, if your skin feels oily after application you are using too much product, only a small amount the size of your pinkie fingernail or less is required to nourish skin.
We also recommend applying our products using wet hands onto skin moistened with one of our hydrating toners. This is to help you apply only a thin film of oil and so that your serum or moisturiser can lock in the hydration delivered to the surface of the skin by the toner.
Why do you point out that your moisturisers don't contain any water?
Our serums and moisturisers are anhydrous, meaning without water, which is why we do not need to add harmful emulsifiers or preservatives to our products to keep the water evenly dispersed or to prevent the microbiological spoilage that happens to all products that contain a mixture of both water and oils. Both emulsifiers^ and preservatives* are likely to be detrimental to optimal health.
Do I have to store the moisturisers in the fridge?
To ensure all of our products retain maximum freshness and bio-availability of the nutrients in our botanical oils we recommend storing all of our products at below 30 degrees Celcius out of direct light.
Doing so will ensure that moisturisers do not melt. Our moisturisers contain Shea and/or Mango butter which is supremely nourishing for skin. However when these butters melt and slowly cool they can form a crystaline structure within the product, thereby making the melted/re-cooled products feel slightly grainy in texture. If your moisturiser is left in a very hot room or a hot car it may melt and then cool slowly forming a grainy texture. If you happen to forget and leave your moisturiser in a hot room or car where it melts, pop it in the fridge to cool quickly thereby preventing the crystalisation taking place. If your moisturiser does develop a grainy texture because it has been subjected to high temperatures the usefulness of the product will remain as the Shea/Mango butter grains will melt quickly when applied to skin.
What is the shelf life of Nourish Botanicals products?
Our products are designed to have either a 6 month or 12 months lifespan when stored correctly from the time of opening. The recommended timeframe is indicated on our packaging denoted by a container with either a 6M or 12M symbol. We expect our products to be opened within 3 months from the day of supply. So please do not store for longer than this prior to opening.
Why don't you include chemical additives or preservatives in your products?
We prefer not to add any unnecessary additives to our products, so we choose to formulate without water. This also means our products are not at risk of microbiological spoilage.
Preservatives are added to all kinds of water-based lotions and moisturisers commonly available to prevent micro-organisms like bacteria, yeast and moulds from growing and spoiling the product and potentially causing infection in the skin. Most moisturisers and lotions are water-based mixtures of oil and water, you can tell by looking at the ingredients. If water or hydrosol is one of the first ingredients then that product will also contain preservatives.
No matter whether these preservatives are naturally derived, carry organic certification or not, these preservatives work by inhibiting metabolic processes that the micro-organisms need to survive. Because we apply preservatives (in the lotions) to our skin we also apply the preservatives to the cells of our skin where their impacts are at best irritants** and at worst serious health concerns*, depending upon the preservative.
Our skin is the largest organ in our body and many products applied are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Parabens and phthalates are types of chemicals used commonly in skin care products that have been shown to interfere with hormone regulation in our bodies*. Many cosmetic creams with long shelf lives such as those found in pharmacies and department stores are preserved with parabens.
Why does the texture of my moisturiser change with temperature?
All of our moisturisers are formulated with only natural botanical oils and butters. Because we do not use chemically altered natural oils like chemically hydrogenated waxes to stabilise texture, our products can and will change slightly in texture depending on the temperature. In very cold conditions our moisturisers will be firmer and on warmer days more soft.
Are Nourish Botanicals products vegan?
Yes all of them are!
Do any of your products contain palm oil?
No, none of them do!
Is the packaging recyclable?
Absolutely! But to make the most of the energy required to manufacture the packaging we hope you consider how to make it useful again at home first or even better, send it back to us and we will re-fill it for you!
Aren't you concerned about the environmental shipping costs of returning packaging?
No. There is so much that could be changed to make our impact on the earth less damaging. If we get overwhelmed by the challenge it's easier to throw up our hands and do nothing. But one thing is certain, eventually, we will have to all start looking at the lifecycle costs of how we go about our lives and our mindless consumption of packaging and containers will be a big part of that. There will be other things that will change, like fully electric vehicles powered by renewable clean energy. But for now, we are working on what is in our control, reducing our consumption of packaging whilst rewarding the brave of us who take up the challenge of trying to live whilst creating little or no waste! While we're doing this we imagine a future with a transport industry powered by clean energy.
